Design or Styling? How to Choose the Right Foxwell Service for Your Space
If you've been following along with Foxwell the studio, you probably know we do a lot more than sell pretty candles and throw pillows (though, yes, we do that too!). What you might not realize is that we actually offer two distinct services: design and styling. So let's break it down.
Foxwell Design: Building the Bones
Think of design as the foundation everything else sits on top of. This is the work that happens before a room looks pretty. It's about how a space actually functions.
What it covers:
Spatial planning and furniture layouts
Architectural changes, like reconfiguring a floor plan or opening up a wall
Fixed material selections — tile, cabinetry, countertops, paint, flooring
3D renderings and vision boards so you can see the plan before it's real
Coordination with contractors and trades to bring it all to life
It starts with a kickoff conversation where our team gets to know your space, your goals, your style, and your budget. From there, we put together a proposal tailored to your project. We'll handle a lot of the behind-the-scenes purchasing and procurement so you don't have to.
Design is the right call if you're renovating, adding on, reworking a floor plan, or starting from a blank slate. Basically anything that touches the structure or hard finishes of your home. If your kitchen doesn't function the way you need it to, or your layout just feels off, that's a design problem, not a styling one.
Foxwell Styling: The Finishing Touch
Once the bones of a space are in place, styling is what makes it feel like you. This is the layer of personality and the part people usually mean when they say "I want my house to look like a magazine."
What it covers:
Curating and arranging decor, art, and accessories
Styling vignettes on shelves, mantels, and coffee tables
Selecting soft furnishings like rugs, pillows, and throws
Pulling together a cohesive look using pieces you already own, new finds, or a mix of both
Styling tends to move faster than a full design project since there's no construction or major decision-making around fixed finishes involved. Our team comes in, assesses what you have, identifies what's missing, and layers in the pieces that bring warmth and character to a room that's otherwise already "done."
Styling is perfect if the layout and finishes of your home already work for you, but the space still feels unfinished, impersonal, or like it hasn't quite come together. It's also a favorite for anyone preparing to sell. A well-styled home shows better and helps buyers picture themselves living there.
So, Which One Do You Need?
Here's a quick gut check:
"I hate how my kitchen is laid out" or "I want to open up this wall" → Design
"My living room feels empty and I don't know what to put on my shelves" → Styling
"I'm building an addition and need help with tile and cabinetry" → Design
"I'm selling my house and want it to show well" → Styling
"I'm redoing a whole room and need help with everything from the floor plan to the throw pillows" → Both! Many of our clients start with design and roll right into styling once the bones are in place.
You Don't Have to Choose Just One
The truth is, design and styling aren't competing services. They're two ends of the same process. Some clients come to us needing a full gut renovation from the studs up, and others just want an afternoon of shelf-styling before a big hosting occasion. Most projects land somewhere in between.
Whether you're dreaming up a full-home remodel or just want your bookshelves to stop looking sad, our team is ready to help you figure out exactly where to start. Stop by the shoppe or reach out to our studio team — we'll help you map out the right path for your space and your budget.
